Monastery Nossa Senhora dos Anjos

This monastery , one of the oldest of the whole region, was opened in 1686 after a ten-year construction time. It is a typical construction of the seventeenth century with a square building and an open space in the center. Specially interesting is the cross of the Saint Antony , situated in front of the monastery and probably from the same period. The altar shows a great variety of Christian symbols and is an interesting example how the church used art as comunication with the public.

The Fallen Angel

This statuette is in the Itajuru Channel, at the beginning of the Channel Palmer and is dated from the beginning of the twentieth century as a memorial of the conclusion of the artificial channel Palmer.This channel was built to ease salt transportation, produced in the salinas of the Araruama Lagoon by sailboats. This monument is sculpured of stone with a total of nine meters. The strong current in the Channel caused this inclination, leading to this new popular name. The Fallen Angel is in the neighborhood of Portinho.

Fortress São Matheus

This fortress was built by Estevão Gomes, between 1618 and 1620, at the entrance of the Itajuru – Channel to protect the town against the numerous pirates’ attacks searching for gold and the natural wealth of the town then called Santa Helena de Cabo Frio.

In the fortress is an exhibition of ship wrecks up to 150 years of age found in the ships sunk at the coast of Cabo Frio and Arraial do Cabo. These pieces belong to researcher Elisio Gomes from Cabo Frio, formerly exhibited in a private house in São Bento.

The most interesting pieces belong to the wreckage of frigate “Thetis” in the year 1830 and to the frigate “Dona Paula” which sunk near the Ilha dos Franceses in 1827.
